Can acupuncture change how the brain responds to touch? A study from twenty seventeen looked at people with carpal tunnel syndrome.

In this condition, a nerve is squeezed at the wrist. This can cause tingling, numbness, or pain in the hand.

The brain has a map for touch. Researchers used scans to see where the index and middle fingers were represented.

The study compared three groups: acupuncture near the affected wrist, acupuncture near the opposite ankle, and sham treatment.

The acupuncture groups received electric pulses. Sham needles touched the skin without going in, and no current was delivered. There were sixteen visits over eight weeks.

After treatment, all three groups reported fewer symptoms. The nerve test showed less delay in signals after acupuncture than after sham treatment.

The scan showed more space between the two finger responses. A clear change was found in the wrist group. The ankle result was uncertain.

Greater changes in this map were linked to more symptom relief three months later. That link does not prove that brain changes caused the relief.

Only thirty-six people had usable scans for the map comparison. These findings do not prove a cure. And they do not tell us whether acupuncture helps nerve damage from chemotherapy.
